It’s an August tradition on the Bay. The Governor’s Cup Yacht Race gets underway this Friday, for the 44th year in a row.
“Gov Cup” is the oldest and longest overnight race on the Bay. Competitors race from Maryland’s current capital city, Annapolis, to its first capital, St. Mary’s City.
At the same time, “Potomac Leg” sailors will set out from Dahlgren, Virginia just north of Colonial Beach, and “Southern Leg” sailors leave from Fishing Bay in Deltaville, Virginia, to sail to St. Mary’s City.
109 sailboats are entered, ranging from 24 feet to 63 feet LOA.
The race can be exhausting, but the after-party is a just reward. The finish line is at the St. Mary’s College of Maryland campus, and race crews are greeted by college alumni for a waterfront crab feast, awards ceremony, and a party with live music.
