Anacostia River Storm Drains Get Beautified in Mural Contest

Who says that stormwater management can’t be beautiful?

Thanks to a talented group of local artists gathered up by the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS),  storm drains around the watershed in Washington, D.C. now sport vibrant, positive murals.

See the slideshow below for some of the inspired designs:

AWS put out a call for designs, and 20 winners were chosen from more than 140 designs submitted. Mural designs were chosen based on their connection to the Anacostia River, the local community, and watershed protection issues. Preference was given to artists who live, work, or go to school near the storm drain locations.

Artists worked with students from Eastern High School and River Terrace Education campus to complete their murals. More murals are planned for the spring with students from Kimball Elementary School.

This project was supported with funding from the District Department of Energy and Environment’s Community Stormwater Solutions grant program, the Carter Family Foundation, and the Coca-Cola Foundation.

All artists will receive a stipend for their artwork.

The District Department of Energy and Environment’s Community Stormwater Solutions grant program, the Carter Family Foundation, and the Coca-Cola Foundation all helped fund the project.
