The HUK Bassmaster Elite Fishing Tournament, which was set to begin Thursday morning and run through the weekend, has been postponed because of unsafe boating conditions caused by the weather.

On Facebook, Bassmaster posted, “After consulting with both authorities and the Elite Advisory Board regarding increased water releases, debris, and current hazardous conditions on tournament waters, B.A.S.S. is postponing this week’s event.”

The tournament was to launch from Flying Point Park on the Bush River. The upper Bay is seeing a lot of debris in the water from this week’s heavy rainfall, warns Maryland Natural Resources Police. As of Thursday morning, the Conowingo Dam’s operators, Exelon Power, had opened 17 cresting gates to address the Susquehanna River’s increased flow.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources said that Exelon expects to open a total of 22 gates Thursday. Record flow could get even higher over the weekend.

Bassmaster hasn’t yet determined a date for the tournament to be rescheduled.
