Bay Bulletin and the Chesapeake Bay Media family are proud to announce we brought home 10 journalism awards across eight categories at the Boating Writers International (BWI) Awards program held at the start of the 2019 Miami International Boat Show.
Cheryl Costello’s weekly videojournalism for Bay Bulletin got the attention of BWI Awards judges, earning her second and third place.The BWI Awards are in their 26th year, and 119 journalists submitted 343 entries, all published in 2018.
Bay Bulletin’s multimedia journalist Cheryl Costello won both second and third place in the Boating Videos category, sponsored by BoatUS. She was recognized for two stories you may remember, “Drones Measure Health of Magothy River” (second place) and “Crab Cup Highlights Accessible Sailing on the Bay” (third). First, second, and third place winners all received cash awards as well as a recognition plaque noting their “Excellence in creating compelling stories about the boating lifestyle through entertaining, educational and inspiring journalism.”
The monthly Chesapeake Bay Magazine also saw top honors. Contributing writer Marty LeGrand won first place in the Environmental Awareness & Education category, for “The Count”, published in the June 2018 magazine issue. Judges raved about the feature:
“LeGrand puts us on the water and right in the middle of one of the most fascinating and complicated U.S. fisheries management issues. This review of the plight of the Chesapeake Bay blue crab offers a fair and in-depth look at the day-to-day challenges faced by fisheries programs around the country,” offers judge Darrell Nicholson.
CBM Cruising Editor Jody Argo Schroath won second in the Boating Travel or Destinations category, for “You’ll Want to See This” from January 2018.
Editor-at-Large John Page Williams also won second in the category Boat Tests & Reviews, for his piece, “Whaler Montauk 170” from last January.
Contributing writer Ann Eichenmuller won third place in the Boating Lifestyles category for her story, “Cocktail Class Family Racing”, from June 2018.
In addition to the cash award winners, Certificates of Merit were presented to entrants who scored within 95 percent of third-place judges’ tallies on each category.
