Boat Collision in Middle River Causes Injuries, Damages Vessels

A nighttime collision between two powerboats in Middle River nearly sinks one of the boats and sends three boaters to the hospital.

Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) say Sunday night around 9:50 p.m., officers responded to reports of a boat collision on Middle River in Bowleys Quarters. Police found that two cabin cruiser-type powerboats had crashed into each other—a 1997 S2 Yachts Pursuit and a 2004 Cruiser.

“The Cruiser vessel sustained extensive damage and began to sink,” NRP spokesperson Lauren Moses tells Bay Bulletin. Emergency responders were able to rescue the four boaters on board. The boat’s operator was taken to a nearby medical center to treat a laceration, NRP says. The two people aboard the Pursuit were also taken to a medical center to assess any possible injuries.

Marine Emergency Team 21, an all-volunteer marine rescue squad based nearby, deployed multiple vessels and a rescue swimmer to help with patient care. Their emergency response boats helped move rescued victims to shore.

Natural Resources Police are investigating the cause of the collision.
