A 12-year-old girl died Tuesday night, swimming off the beach at Sandy Point State Park.
Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) say 12-year-old Kaniya Kenley, from Baltimore, was swimming with a group of 15 people when she went underwater and didn’t resurface. It happened just after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, and triggered a large search of the area.
The Coast Guard, Maryland State Police, Maryland Natural Resources Police, the Annapolis Fire Department, and Anne Arundel County Fire Department all searched into the night, using rescue boats, side-scan sonar, and by walking the shoreline and jetty at Sandy Point.
NRP says Kenley’s body was recovered 40 yards from shore & taken to the medical examiner’s office.
