Take heart, boaters: spring is on the way. And the Annapolis Maritime Museum is encouraging everyone to say goodbye to the harsh winter by burning your socks!
It’s a longtime tradition for Annapolis boaters, who wouldn’t dare be seen wearing boat shoes with SOCKS. Anyone who wants to get in on the action can join the Annapolis Oyster Roast & Sock Burning on Saturday, March 24 from 12 to 4 p.m. It’s a bonfire on the beach, along with all-you-can-eat oysters, held at the Maritime Museum in Eastport.
“This is an authentic and unique Annapolis tradition that started right here in Eastport,” said Alice Estrada, Executive Director of the Museum. “We love seeing how it has been replicated nationally.”
At this year’s Sock Burning, there are new boat rides for partygoers to visit the Museum’s second campus, just across Back Creek. The annual event brings back old favorites like the oyster shucking contest.
Admission to this Eastport party includes unlimited raw and roasted oysters, live music by the Eastport Oyster Boys, admission to the Museum’s exhibits, and a chance to tour a skipjack. Food trucks will be on site, and beer, wine, and themed cocktails will be available for purchase.
Guests can buy a general admission ticket for $25 in advance or $30 at the door, if tickets are still available the day of the Sock Burning. Kids 12 and under are free. The People’s Choice ticket includes two drink tickets and a private tasting for $75. People’s Choice guests will judge ten premier Annapolis restaurants competing for best oyster dish. The Museum says these tickets are going fast.
