It’s a great deal that not everybody knows about: senior citizens can buy a lifetime pass to enter all national parks and recreational areas for just $10.
But seniors looking to take advantage of this opportunity will need to act quickly.
Fort McHenry, preservationmaryland.orgThe National Park Service has announced that on August 28, it will raise the price of the “America the Beautiful- National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass” for the first time since 1994. The price will go up from $10 to $80.
But lifetime passes bought before August 28, for $10, will be honored indefinitely.
The extra revenue from the price increase will be used to make improvements at the parks, according to legislation passed by Congress last December.
The legislation also stipulates that the National Park Service offer a one-year senior pass for $20.
The National Park Service points out that the majority of national parks and recreation areas are still free: only 118 of the 417 parks currently charge admission.
Some of the national parks along the Chesapeake Bay include Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Fort Monroe in Hampton, and the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail.
