Crisfield Bakery Debuts Old Bay-Frosted Smith Island Cake

It’s the dessert that has everyone talking, and it hasn’t even been released to the public yet: Smith Island cake, Maryland’s state dessert, topped with frosting flavored with Old Bay seasoning.

Crisfield-based Smith Island Baking Co. announced on its website that Thursday, Feb. 6 is the first day you can get your hands on its “boldest flavor yet,” featuring vanilla cake and an Old Bay buttercream frosting. The bakery describes it as “sweet, creamy, a little spicy, and a little salty,” made for those who love Old Bay.

News of the daring dessert spread quickly on social media, with the comments ranging from excitement to downright disgust– and in some cases, both.

One Facebook user wrote, “YUCKK!! I can’t wait to try it!”

Another said, “This is the most Maryland thing Maryland has ever done,” which Smith Island Baking joked just might become its new slogan.

A third Facebook fan tried a sample of the new cake at the bakery, and proclaimed it to be “delicious!”

The large size of the Old Bay Buttercream Smith Island Cake feeds 14 to 16 people and can be ordered beginning Thursday for $60. If you dare.
