“Don’t Suck. Sip Responsibly” sounds like it could be a PSA about alcohol abuse, but it’s actually a new warning about the dangers of plastic straws.
The environmental non-profit group Annapolis Green is using the tagline for its new campaign to keep plastic out of the Chesapeake Bay. Straws are one of the most common items found in shoreline cleanups, and one billion plastic straws are used every day worldwide.
The organization launched the effort just in time for Annapolis Restaurant Week, and is urging restaurants and diners to change their habits.
Annapolis Green wants restaurant staff to stop putting plastic straws in every drink served, and instead, to give patrons a biodegradable paper straw upon request. The organization is offering to supply restaurants with paper straws, thanks to a donation from Leonard Paper. Annapolis Green will also give restaurants posters and provide staff training.
As for diners, the organization wants you to “say no to the plastic straw” at restaurants, and spread the word in your community and on social media.
