Songs from the Underground Railroad – Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots

The Maryland Park Service, National Park Service, and the National Council for the Traditional Arts are proud to be offering a free per formance by Sunpie & the Louisiana Sunspots. Join them on Thursday, Sept ember 5 from 3pm to 4:30pm, under the pavilion at the Harriet Tubman Un derground Railroad State Park.
Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes, a former professional football player and National Park Service park ranger for 30 years, is an acclaimed accordionist, harmonica player, and rese archer. Sunni is known for performing his own style of Afro-Louisian a music that combines Zydeco, Blues, Gospel, and Caribbean Tradi tions.
One of Sunpie’s areas of expertise is the deep wells pring of traditional songs, African American spirituals in parti cular, that contained hidden meanings for enslaved Africans who dreamed of reaching freedom on the Underground Railroad. Joinin g Sunpie will be LeRoy Etienne on drums and Michael Harris on bass.
The event is free of charge for and seating is avail able on a first come, first serve basis.
