The fire department says a large debris pile caught fire around 7:30 p.m. Monday. A large column of smoke formed, visible from the Bay miles away. Baltimore County Fire Department spokesman, Lieutenant Tim Rostkowski, says when firefighters arrived, the fire was about 25 by 25 feet, and spreading.

Chesapeake Bay Magazine staff could see the huge smoke cloud all the way from Annapolis.

Because there are no active water sources at the site, the fire department had to call in a tanker strike team to bring in water, and fireboats attacked the fire at the shoreline.

Fire crews from Anne Arundel and Howard Counties as well as Baltimore City came to help- with more than 100 firefighters in all.

The fire was contained late Monday night. Fire crews were expected to stay on the scene overnight, to keep the fire contained and put out any hot spots. No injuries were reported.
