A beloved minor league baseball team in Maryland just got a Chesapeake Bay makeover.
The Double-A Baltimore Orioles affiliate, the Bowie Baysox, has been renamed and rebranded the Chesapeake Baysox. Their logo now features a fierce-looking blue crab holding a Maryland flag that flies on a baseball bat instead of a flagpole. The crab has orange claw tips, so we can assume she’s a female.
An alternate logo includes an orange block-letter “B” floating in what looks like choppy Chesapeake Bay water. Player uniforms, released as a sneak peek on social media, include a light blue watermark of the Chesapeake Bay with iconic Bay images: a lighthouse, a great blue heron, rockfish, and even an Eastern hellbender.
The Baysox announced its official renaming during a special event at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Annapolis. The team calls it a new chapter in Baysox baseball, which expands the brand to “better reflect the broad and diverse community of fans who support the team across the region.”
The Baysox play at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland. But their reach goes much farther. Last season, they welcomed fans from every Maryland county, to include 378 Maryland zip codes. Fans arrived from 42 other states as well. The Chesapeake Baysox name is intended to reach its growing fan base across the broader Bay region.
“Our stadium is more than a venue—it’s a gathering place where the community comes together to experience the excitement of the game, rally behind our players, and celebrate together. We are here for everyone who calls the Chesapeake region home, as well as those who come to experience the beauty and spirit of our area,” says Baysox owner Greg Baroni, Founder and CEO of Attain Sports.
Baysox games are known for being kid-friendly and reasonably priced, along with having ample parking. Fans can see rising professional baseball stars up close compared to a Major League stadium.
As the Double-A affiliate for the Orioles, a team known for its young talent in recent years, the Baysox have brought up big names like Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Anthony Santander, Grayson Rodriguez, Heston Kjerstad, and briefly, Jackson Holliday.
Of course, the Chesapeake Baysox are in good company with other Chesapeake Bay-themed minor league teams. The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, Since-A Delmarva Shorebirds, and Triple-A Norfolk Tides come to mind.
Along with the new name and logos, fans can look forward to a new set of uniforms for the 2025 season. With the ever-growing enthusiasm for Maryland’s coats-of-arms state flag and the Chesapeake Bay blue crab, fan merchandise is sure to be popular. Sales of the new gear launched this weekend, just in time for the holiday season.
