Learn to Row on the Miles River

If you’ve ever seen a 60-foot rowing shell cut through the water at dawn with eight perfectly synchronized people propelling it, you may be intrigued to try rowing.

The Eastern Shore Community Rowers (ESCR) are offering a chance to do just that in St. Michaels next month. With equipment and instruction provided, rowing is surprisingly beginner-friendly.

ESCR members will lead an Introduction to Rowing workshop on Saturday, July 13 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. The rowing club says “participants will gain an understanding of the equipment rowers use and the physical techniques of rowing, along with the opportunity to be on the Miles River in a rowing shell.”

Everyone must be 14 or older, be able to swim, and to lift and board a low-to-water rowing shell. The workshop is on the 13th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a rain date of July 20. Those interested must register in advance. The cost is $40 per person, with a 20% discount for Maritime Museum members. Click here to register.
