Manitou has developed a patented tri-tube construction system in which the large center pontoon extends 5.25 inches below the two outside tubes, in effect providing the same kind of deadrise as a monohull. As a result, a Manitou with either VP or high-speed SHP (Sport Handling Package) pontoons handles like a monohull, banking inward in turns. Special positive-angle lifting strakes on the center tube, and splash guards on all three, make these boats seaworthy enough to take on moderate conditions even in the open Bay once the skipper has learned the boat’s strengths and weaknesses. In fact, somewhat like power catamarans, these pontoon boats perform well with modest power over a wide range of speeds. An Encore 23 with the VP tube system will run well with a 115-hp four-stroke, offering enough speed for tubing and water skiing. With a Bimini top, a stereo, comfortable seating for up to ten people, and a portable toilet with privacy curtain, the boat falls within the $50,000 window. Manitou even offers an angling version, the Encore Angler 22, which can be fitted with fishing swivel chairs, a capable Lowrance fishfinder/GPS display and a bow-mount electric motor. Manitou is also a member of NMMA, so all of its boats’ systems are built according to ABYC standards.
