Md. to Spend $12.5 Million on 57 Boating Access Projects

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has announced $12.5 million to improve public boating access in Fiscal Year 2019. The money will be spent on projects including dredging, boat ramps, bulkheads, and emergency rescue equipment.

The Waterway Improvement Fund grants will go toward 57 projects in 18 counties and Baltimore City. In addition to dredging local and federal navigation channels, public boating facilities will see improvements to bulkheads, parking, piers and ramps.

“We are committed to expanding opportunities for our citizens and visitors to appreciate all that our waterways, coastal bays, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean have to offer, and these grants will allow even more Marylanders to make memories out on the water,” says Maryland Governor Larry Hogan.

The Waterway Improvement Fund is raised from a five percent vessel excise tax on boat purchases and titling. It was created in 1966 to support the public’s use of Maryland waters.
