Md Awards $13.5 Million for Dredging, New Ice Breaker & Fire Boats

$2 million in Waterway Improvement Fund money will go toward replacing the 100-foot ice breaker J. Millard Tawes.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will put $13.5 million in Waterway Improvement Fund grants towards projects that support boating all over the Bay.

Some of the 58 projects being funded are statewide, like $2 million that will go towards replacing the state’s ice breaker, J. Millard Tawes, and $1.241 million for storm damage and dredging that falls outside of regular dredging projects. (Dozens of individual dredging projects are funded, too.)

Others fill on-water emergency needs, like new fire boats for volunteer fire departments in Oxford and Bowleys Quarters on Middle River, and a fire pump for the Grasonville Volunteer Fire Department.

And many projects add or improve water access, like new dinghy docks, boat ramp and bulkhead repairs, and even a new town marina in Pocomoke City.

The Waterway Improvement Fund money is primarily generated by a five-percent vessel excise tax on boat purchases and titling.
