Miss America, Orchestra Perform Thomas Point-Inspired Music

What do you get when you combine orchestra music, Bay culture, and environmental activism? You get this weekend’s Londontowne Symphony Orchestra performance.

Oh, and Miss America will be there, too.

The unique event will be held this Saturday evening, Jan. 25, at St. John’s College in Annapolis. It celebrates Annapolis Green, an organization founded in 2006 by two women who are leading the charge in Maryland’s capital to reduce straws and single-use plastics, among other environmental efforts.

The first piece to be performed on Saturday ties directly to the Chesapeake Bay environment. It’s titled Thomas Point Suite, and written by local composer Randall Neilson.

Miss America 2019 Nia Franklin

Then, Miss America 2019, Nia Franklin, who is a trained soprano, will join the orchestra to perform popular arias and songs. The night will close out with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (“Pastorale”), which uses instruments to evoke elements of nature: cellos for flowing water, flute, oboe an clarinet for nightingales, quails and cuckoos, all building to a violent thunderstorm.

The Londontowne Symphony Orchestra is a comunity orchestra made up of local prfessionals, teachers, military musicians, and students. This Saturday’s concert begins at 7:30 p.m., with a pre-concert reception at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available online or at the door, at a cost of $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and students are free.
