New Store Brings Recycled Sail Bags to Annapolis

Sea Bags, based in Portland, Maine, has just opened its first store in Maryland, across the street from Chick & Ruth’s Delly on Main Street Annapolis.

The company, founded in 1999, designs and makes items from recycled sails, including totes and home accessories. Sea Bags uses sail cloth from sails that were actively used, and the company says there are signs of hard sailing in every product, making each one unique.

Their Annapolis store will carry some special, regionally-specific designs like crabs,  a chart of Annapolis, and navy and gold anchors in a nod to the Naval Academy.

Sea Bags says it already gets a lot of online customers from Maryland, and even some who have visited their Maine stores.

“It just makes sense to bring our products closer to them in Annapolis with its beautiful nautical setting, presence of the Naval Academy, and long history as the sailing capital of the U.S. It feels like a natural place for our products,” says CEO Don Oakes.

Sea Bags’ Annapolis store held its grand opening last Thursday, just in time for the Midnight Madness shopping event in Annapolis. The company tells Bay Bulletin it got a warm reception, with folks knocking on the door before the store was even open. Sea Bags is located at 168 Main Street, Annapolis.
