The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News is offering an Offshore Safety at Sea Course that will earn participants an official U.S. Sailing certification.
The Captain Henry Marx Memorial Safety at Sea Course, held on Saturday, February 29, honors the annual course’s program instructor, who passed away in 2018. Captain Marx, the former owner and president of Landfall Navigation, leaves a legacy of more than 40 years of international sailing experience.
Mark Lenci, a retired U.S. Navy captain, will carry the torch, moderating the day-long course that covers emergency communications, overboard procedures, safety equipment, signal flares, marine weather, and dealing with large ships.
The course is open to cruising and racing skippers, crew and families, as well as recreational and commercial boaters. The Mariners’ Museum says the course, offered in partnership with Landfall Navigaton, is the most comprehensive in the Greater Hampton Roads region.
Registration includes lectures and demonstrations, a Safety at Sea guide book, U.S. Sailing certification, and lunch. The price goes up February 1. To register, click here.
