Sailboat Demasted on Choptank River, Sailors Rescued

Two boaters had a scary experience when their sailboat’s engine lost power and struck the Choptank River Bridge late last month.

Rescue Fire Company of Cambridge, Md. responded to the scene at 10 a.m. the morning after Thanksgiving. A sailboat was damaged and adrift near the Malkus Bridge that carries Rt. 50 across the Choptank River. The vessel had two people aboard, according to Maryland Natural Resources Police.

The boaters told police their boat collided with the bridge after losing engine power, and the collision caused the mast to break. The two on board were not injured and officers brought them back to shore safely.

However the boat suffered significant damage and had to be towed back to shore, according to police.
