This year’s Annapolis Film Festival will feature a special screening of COURAGEOUS, an NBC Films documentary that follows Ted Turner’s America’s Cup victory in 1977.
The film is narrated by Oscar winner Michael Douglas, and tells the story of the last amateur team to win the America’s Cup. Media mogul Ted Turner was just 37 years old at the time, was running a small independent TV station in Atlanta, and had just bought the struggling Atlanta Braves.
On the yacht Courageous, Turner and his unknown crew were up against the top two sailmakers in the world, Lowell North and Ted Hood. His win led to a string of business innovations, including the launch of CNN.
Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, who played for the Braves, is also in the film talking about how Turner’s sports success extended to baseball, when his team eventually won the World Series.
The film will be shown Saturday, March 24 at 11:45 a.m. at Maryland Hall in Annapolis. Afterwards, several crew members from Courageous, including National Sailing Hall of Fame’s Gary Jobson, as well as NBC Films director Matt Allen, will answer questions at a panel discussion.
