It’s the happy ending we were all hoping for. Wilma Lee, a skipjack built on the Bay in 1940 who found her way to North Carolina, needed a home. And now she has found it– at the Annapolis Maritime Museum, where her history will live on.
It all started last October, when a nonprofit organization in Ocracoke, North Carolina appealed to Bay Bulletin for help. The group Ocracoke Alive had been operating Wilma Lee as a charter boat, and didn’t have the captain, or the funds, to keep her running anymore. The nonprofit felt the best thing would be to sell her to someone on the Chesapeake Bay, bringing the skipjack back to her origins. To read our story about the search for a buyer, click here.
Now, we’re happy to report, an anonymous donor has put up the money to bring Wilma Lee to the Bay. She has arrived at her “forever home,” the Annapolis Maritime Museum, where she’ll serve as a floating classroom. Bay Bulletin‘s Cheryl Costello was there for her arrival, and takes us on board.
