Southern MD Boat Collision Leaves One Boater Dead

Police are investigating a boat collision in the Bay off Southern Maryland that left one person dead and another injured Saturday night after dark.

The collision was reported just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, about 2.25 miles off Breezy Point in Calvert County. The North Beach Volunteer Fire Department’s rescue boat arrived to find that two boats had collided and two of the boaters were injured, one of them already in cardiac arrest.

With the help of other people on board the involved boats, the North Beach VFD transferred the two patients to the rescue boat and administered CPR. They rushed the patients back to land, where Calvert County EMS and Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department were waiting to help.

Despite first responders’ efforts, the victim suffering cardiac arrest died, but the other boater was taken to the hospital with what Maryland Natural Resources Police call minor injuries.

Natural Resources Police are tight-lipped about the two boats involved in the crash, saying only that they were both recreational vessels. Police also say that alcohol “does not appear to have been a factor.”

They are still investigating the deadly crash.

In a Facebook post, the North Beach VFD writes, “The NBVFD extends its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, and wishes the injured well for a full recovery.”
