Update: USCG Mid-Atlantic says the owner has been identified, contact, and is safe.
The Coast Guard and Maryland Natural Resources Police need help finding the operator of a jon boat found on the rocks at Gibson Island Monday morning.
The boat is 12 feet long and green, with a 4-hp Yamaha engine. It had two adult-sized life jackets, a bucket and a plastic crate (crabbing gear) on board. It has no hull numbers.
It’s not clear whether anyone was actually on board the boat before it washed up near the causeway, and the Anne Arundel County Fire Department tells Bay Bulletin their initial surface search was negative. There has been no one reported missing, according to county police, and the boat is not related to last week’s tragedy, in which the bodies of two crabbers were recovered in the water near Riviera Beach.
If you have any information on the jon boat or its operator, please call Maryland Natural Resources Police at 410-260-8888 or USCG Sector Maryland-National Capital Region command center at 410-576-2525.
