The Port of Baltimore has never handled a container ship as large as this. The Gunde Maersk, hailing from Denmark, is over 1,203 feet long and weighs 99,000 gross tons.
The ship can carry 11,000 20-Foot-Equivalent containers. The Gunde Maersk arrived at the Port of Baltimore’s Seagirt Marine Terminal on Sunday, and worked through Monday before heading down the Bay.
The Gunde Maersk draws almost 43 feet. The Port of Baltimore says its 50-foot-deep channel and supersized cranes made it possible to accommodate the behemoth container ship. The Port continues to grow to handle more and more traffic. It set records in the first quarter of 2018 for both cargo and containers.
