A hipster bar and nightclub in Northwest Washington, D.C. is making a strong statement about plastic waterway pollution. For the last two weeks of 2018, DC9 has transformed its first-floor bar into a “Garbage BARge,” decorated with plastic straws, six-pack rings, and other waste that would otherwise end up in the Potomac River, the Bay, and ultimately, the ocean. It’s timely, since D.C.’s plastic straw ban takes effect at the start of 2019.
Cheryl Costello was there for the BARge’s opening night and takes us inside.
