Two wild baby oysters turn up on a protected reef in the Patapsco River, near Baltimore’s Key Bridge.
It sounds small, but the discovery of oysters reproducing in the wild is a huge milestone for the reef and the oyster restoration groups who have planted literally millions of oysters on the man-made reef. All of those oysters came from larvae that were grown in a lab, then kept in cages as spat on shell, and fostered by volunteers until they were big enough to survive on the reef.
Cheryl Costello talks to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation about the recent reproduction victory, and the volunteers who are looking after oyster cages all winter long.
