The search has been suspended for a 58-year-old woman reported missing in the water at Deep Creek near the James River. The Coast Guard says the woman apparently fell in at Warwick Yacht and Country Club in Newport News Sunday night. And a good Samaritan found a body matching her description ono Monday.
USCG Sector Virginia got a call from Warwick just after 8:30 Sunday night confirming a person in the water. An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast was issued for the area and several agencies launched a search.
The Coast Guard sent both a boat crew and a helicopter air crew to search the area. Newport News Police and York County Police Departments used drones, sonar scanners and small boats as additional resources in the search. And Newport News Fire Department, York County Fire Department, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Suffolk County Fire Department, the Port of Virginia, and James City County Fire Department were also helping in the search.
The Coast Guard said Monday afternoon that a good Samaritan notified Newport News Police of a body found near the Menchville Marina, closer to the mouth of Deep Creek from Warwick. By that time, USCG says it had searched 518 square miles for over 16 hours.
The body’s identity had not been confirmed and the victim’s name hadn’t yet been released as of Monday night.
