Young Cancer Patient’s First Fishing Trip

A 7-year-old boy from Ohio, who had never fished on the Chesapeake Bay, now has an Eastern Shore charter-fishing experience under his belt.

Casey Cares, a Baltimore-based organization that offers vacations to critically ill children, set up the trip for Liam Young and his dad, James, who live west of Cleveland, Ohio.

Liam is battling Burkitt’s Cell Leukemia, a rare form of cancer. He was diagnosed in April 2017, and doctors thought he might not make it at one point. His weight dropped to 37 pounds at the toughest part of his treatment.

Liam loves fishing with his dad, so a charter boat fishing trip– with a two-night stay on the Eastern Shore and two seafood dinners– was just the ticket.

The Inn at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club donated a room, along with a crab dinner on their deck and a meal at Hemingway’s, along with other treats. Mike Sadler of Southern Belle Charters donated the fishing trip out of Kent Island.

Below, watch as Liam Young takes the helm of the charter fishing boat:

The Youngs stopped at the Casey Cares office on their drive back to Ohio, where Liam proudly told staff all about the “two-footer” he caught.

Liam’s fishing trip marks the 650th vacation getaway that Casey Cares has provided to families with kids fighting serious illnesses.
